Softer backgrounds (Bokeh) also depend on the lens aperture. A lens that can provide a constant f/2.8 aperture (This number is a wide aperture), gives you a softer background than shooting with a lens at smaller aperture, f/5.6 for example. Canon has an 85mm lens that provides f/1.8 aperture for around $400. This lens is used for portrait photography and it will give you a very nice soft background (Nice bokeh)
