The conflict between sports fans and geeks (enthusiasts of science fiction, fantasy, gaming, etc.) often stems from cultural and social divisions. These two groups traditionally represent distinct interests that are frequently viewed as mutually exclusive, leading to a sense of rivalry.

This can create a sense of "us vs. them," where each group views the other as fundamentally different.
